Salina Downtown Inc. was established as a nonprofit merchant’s association in 1975, and was one of the first business improvement districts in Kansas, beginning in 1983. SDI is governed by a 13 member board of directors. Board agendas and minutes can be accessed here. SDI supports small business through several development incentives. The entrepreneurial spirit upon which Salina was founded is still the heartbeat of our independently owned businesses. It is our mission to champion a healthy and vibrant downtown community!
Salina Downtown is a destination location being conveniently located at the crossroads of I-135 and I-70. It is also home to the beautiful 1931 historical Stiefel Theatre, Smoky Hill Museum, and the brand new 70,000 square foot Salina Fieldhouse. Salina Downtown is a place where you can not only dine and shop with friends, but gather for historic car cruises, parades and family fun runs. Our pedestrian friendly atmosphere encourages you to explore, experience, and enjoy, what Salina Downtown has to offer!
Meet the team!
Penny Bettles has been with Salina Downtown, Inc. since 2011 and has been acting director since 2016. Since becoming the Director, Penny has worked diligently in overseeing the administration, programming, strategic plan and financial stability of the organization.
Hi, I'm Leslie Bishop. I'm very excited to be back in Downtown Salina as the new Administrative Assistant! Years ago, before marriage and a child, I worked in my families travel agency, which was located downtown. I became active in Downtown Salina, serving on (the then) Downtown Promotion Committee. I served as a Chamber Ambassador & Co-created/started the Downtown Christmas parade. It feels like I've come "full circle".
The last ten years, I could be found at Salina Central High School. Before Central and after the travel agency, I was fortunate to stay home with my son. While working inside the home, I was a volunteer in the schools, cub scouts, my church and helped with school sports my son was involved in. I am married to Jim - for 22 years. We are the proud parents to Evan. Evan graduated high school, in May of 2020 and he is pursuing a degree in Engineering. I enjoy cooking, movies, travel and walking our rescue hound, "Rufus". I look forward to meeting all of you very soon!

She and her three kids enjoy local activities and shop local business because she is a native herself. Living in Salina most of her life, Kelsey attended Salina South and K-State Salina before studying biology at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi. But, family draws you home and she is excited to be a part of Salina Downtown Inc.
